Meditation the simple way

Meditation

In these past 10 months apart from the pandemic endless news, one thing has stood out that most of the activities had to either forcibly slow down or the requirement of the nature of activities around the world took a turn to slow down.

With so many deaths due to this virus spread across worldwide and every part of the world, whether developed or underdeveloped nations were keen to see what are the methods that can keep us healthy during these times as well. There is a sudden rise in people asking and to know more about healthy living. The world looked at eastern medicines and way of life.

Many of the people have taken up Yoga lessons as a key source of building their inner strength. In lay man terms Yoga means union of mind and body. Yoga was and is still practiced in India in almost all of the towns and is part of the culture, less with the current generation of course. The benefits of yoga is well known and reputed. Today you will be surprised to know that there are more Yoga practitioners in the US than in India.

Yoga can be known as an advanced form of meditation. There are not only bodily postures but the very inner peace that is brought by various breathing techniques and practices.

A simple technique which I learnt from the Isha yoga is given below. You may follow this or it can be any other method that you have learnt. Below is a free background music video which you can use to simply concentrate while doing your meditation or yoga exercise.

  • Choose a secluded place where you are not going to be disturbed for a while.
  • Sit in a cross legged position, with your spine erect.
  • Close your eyes, let the background music sink in and help you concentrate.
  • Take a deep breath and relax, take another deep breath and relax more. Finally take another deep breath and completely relax.
  • Still keeping your eyes closed, look upwards in between your eye brows and gently focus on your breathing. Just getting this breathing in a stable pattern over a period of time will bring immense benefit to you, in terms of clarity of thought, perception and some say help in activation of the third eye chakra as well.

You can do this for 5 minutes in the beginning and then slowly increase it to 10 minutes. If this hurts your eye, please stop immediately and relax. Some of you may face slight heaviness in your head while doing this. It is perfectly ok, however do not overdo this exercise.

The next step you may also do while in the same posture as above is to say in you mind while breathing while inhaling "I am not the body" and while exhaling "I am not even the mind". Do this for at least 18 minutes daily once in morning and once in evening for 48 days. This is one mandala cycle. You  can see this as an actual cleansing of the mind and getting yourselves actually prepared for more rigorous yoga practicing. By doing this you stand to gain the maximum when you do more advanced yoga practices.

Do let me know how actually you feel after following the details mentioned above.
